I recently discovered how bad conventional nail polish is for you. Traditional nail polish contains a host of harmful chemicals and is one of the most toxic beauty products around. These chemicals can be especially harmful to children and women who are pregnant.
The Problem with Nail Polish
Nail polishes often include:
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) -The State of California and other authoritative bodies have classified dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as a reproductive and developmental toxicant, and the European Union has banned the use of this ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products. (Source)
- Formaldehyde–It is used as a preservative in some cosmetics and other consumer products such as dishwashing liquids and fabric softeners. This known carcinogen is found in many nail polishes and has been linked to cancer and serious breathing problems. (Source)
- Toulene–Exposure to toluene can result in temporary effects such as headaches, dizziness and cracked skin, as well as more serious effects such as reproductive damage and respiratory complications. (Source)
Research
“Researchers at Duke University and Environmental Working Group have found evidence of a suspected endocrine-disrupting chemical widely used in popular nail polishes in the bodies of more than two-dozen women who participated in a biomonitoring study.
The study, published today in Environment International, found that all women had a metabolite of triphenyl phosphate, or TPHP, in their bodies just 10 to 14 hours after painting their nails. Their levels of diphenyl phosphate or DPHP, which forms when the body metabolizes TPHP, had increased by nearly sevenfold.
In fact a number of laboratory studies have found that exposure to TPHP caused endocrine disruption. In animal studies, it has caused reproductive and developmental problems. Recent scientific research suggests that TPHP may contribute to weight gain and obesity.”(Source)

My Colors
Bad Obsession is the perfect shade of Red. Not too berry and not too fire engine red. It’s great for a date night or a special occasion.
Ella’s Pick and a fun bright pink color. It’s perfect for spring. It comes in a small 7ml bottle and is great for little ones and little toes.
Barefoot is my favorite color so far! It reminds me of Ballet Slippers from Essie (but less harmful ha!). It is a light pink color good to wear daily and for weddings. I am IN LOVE!
In A Rush is a quick drying top coat. Its clear and dries really fast.
They also make Soy Polish Remover that is vitamin-enriched with Vitamins A, C & E, as well as Lavender Essential Oil, all of which promote healthy and moisturized nails. It does NOT contain acetone or harsh acetates.
This nail polish remover is great and IT WORKS! You need to wipe each nail with the solution and then wait a few seconds, then wipe until the color is gone. It leaves my nails soft and moisturized not all dried out and stinky like normal acetone based removers. I am NEVER going back to regular removers.
I’m so glad to have found a non-toxic nail polish that works great! I totally threw away my MANY bottles of expensive, toxic nail polish without blinking an eye!
Please consider doing the same and only use non-toxic nail polish on yourself and your little ones.
What will it hurt?!
These fantastic nail polishes are available at Ulta and Target or on their website at www.ellamila.com.
